In an “Iron Chef” fashion; Tyndall AFB, Eglin AFB, and Hurlburt Field took the best out of their kitchens and put them in the arena for some great food and friendly competition. Each base first held a competition among its own chefs to decide who would compete in the First Annual Gulf Coast Top Chef Challenge. From Eglin AFB the challenger was A1C Christian Gallagher and his entrée chicken saltimbocca; Hurlburt Field sent in A1C Katrin Julian with her top dish, a gourmet lobster tail in a garlic porter sauce with couscous and a cucumber and tomato salad in olive oil; and our champion SrA Brandon Johnson and his stuffed pork loin with sherry potatoes and orange glazed carrots.
Keeping with the “Iron Chef” spirit of the contest a secret ingredient was revealed to the contestants to incorporate with their dish. The ingredient had to be used in the dish and not simply placed on the side or as a garnish. The ingredient somehow fitting for Florida was fresh oranges. In addition the contest included a one hour time limit. For SrA Brandon Johnson that was a critical factor, because his pork loin had a 45 minute cook time. While some contestants simply used orange juice with everything SrA Johnson took oranges to the next level. Using fresh squeezed orange juice he made an orange glaze for his carrots incorporating the flavor and complementing the rest of his dish.
While completely destroying his competition after the judging was complete, SrA Johnson stated, “When I saw the presentations of the other two [competitors] I thought I might be in trouble.” While every contestant earned praise for their dishes and the judges enjoyed a rather lavish meal, only one person stood out at the end. Taking home the TOP CHEF Trophy, a Japanese Damascus Steel knife set, and a personalized knife block was none other than our own SrA Brandon Johnson. Is he glad to be home and reopening the Berg Liles kitchen, absolutely! After winning his debut competition he looks forward to the next time he dons his white coat and enters the arena. Bobby Flay, do you think you can handle a throw down with Tyndall’s Finest?
George Fetzko is Inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. The USBC Panama City Bowling Association has inducted Mr. George Fetzko into its Hall of Fame for meritorious service. This is a well deserved honor for a man who has devoted his life to the advancement of bowling. Mr. Fetzko retired from the military after twenty years of service, and retired from Raptor Lanes after thirty-five years as the manager there. For twelve years during his time as manager at Raptor Lanes he also worked at a bowling alley as a mechanic. Soon after he retired in December 2006, he was asked to return to Raptor Lanes as the Recreation Assistant. In this new position he does a little bit of everything, and he seems to love what he is doing.
Mr. Fetzko has not bowled in twenty-five years, but he is still passionate about the sport. Of all the experiences he has had in his long career, he has enjoyed working with the youth programs the most. He believes that it is important to get kids involved with bowling because they are the future of the sport. After two retirements Mr. Fetzko is still enthusiastic about his work, and he continues to make the bowling center a better place everyday.
In honor of Mr. Fetzko’s achievement the bowling center is having an open house. They are rolling back prices on May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Games will be fifty cents, and shoe rentals will be free.

Let me start this blog with a disclaimer: As literary inclined as I am, I will not be able to describe how much fun you will have at this event. (Yes, even if you think you can’t draw a straight line with a ruler.)
That being said, this event is going to be awesome.
Let me give you the rundown: The Heritage Club is hosting a local area company for the evening called How Great Your Art. They are bringing all of their canvases, brushes, easels and paint they have for the evening, along with a very talented (and fun) artist to guide you through a very aesthetically pleasing painting (look below to see the fun contest we are having.)
You might ask:
You: Is the best part of this night the Italian food by Chef Okato?
Services: No, though the food will be great!
You: Is the best part that there will be lots of great wine available?
Services: No, but that is pretty cool too…
You: Is the best part that I will be painting something and will walk out feeling like Picasso with my new piece of art in tote?
Services: Yes, I am going to have to say that will be the best part, because it is something you will be able to keep forever, and you can brag about it! But, just as fun is being able to poke and prod your equally inartistic friends about how “special” their painting is.
You: So where do I sign up?
Services: At the Heritage Club by April 25th.The event will take place May 2nd at 6 p.m. And it will be a full evening of fun, so please plan accordingly. Just call 283-4357 for more information or just come by the Heritage Club during duty hours to pick up a ticket. Tickets are $37 for club members and $40 for non-club members.
